Venous Disease

Venous disease remains a common problem within the community.

Definition of Venous Disease

Venous disease is defined as any pathologic process that damages the veins of the blood vessel system. Most commonly patients report varicosities or dilated veins.

Anatomy of Venous Disease

The veins are responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from the organs back to the heart for reoxygenation. Over time, patients who spend long amounts of time standing or simply due to bad luck, patients can develop varicosities and even wounds due to malfunctioning veins. Typically, these wounds are found on the inside of the legs just above the ankles.

Causes of Venous Disease

There are numerous causes of venous disease but the most venous disease is caused increased venous pressure. This can be caused by excessive standing with malfunctioning valves of the veins. It can also be caused by pregnancy and obesity.

Symptoms of Venous Disease

Most patients with significant varicosities report leg swelling or tiredness of the legs at the end of the day. Some also report tenderness over the varicosities themselves. Patients with more severe disease will report skin changes and wounds.

Diagnosis of Venous Disease

The diagnosis can be made based on the clinical findings as well as the ultrasound to obtain a definitive diagnosis.

Prevention of Venous Disease

Prevention of venous disease centers around maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and routine use of compression stockings can help avoid venous disease.

Am I At Risk for Venous Disease?

People who are obese, stand for long periods of time, and those who are pregnant are all at risk for varicosities.

Treatment of Venous Disease

While many patients have relief from symptoms with compression stockings, some patients will require surgical intervention. This can be in the form of ablation, injection with medications or even excision. Your vascular surgeon will discuss treatment options based on symptoms and physical findings.
