Treatment of Meckel’s Diverticulum

Surgeons treat acquired as well as congenital conditions. One of the most common congenital problems is a Meckel’s Diverticulum. Although this condition typically presents in childhood, it can on occasion present in adults. This is usually a small out pouching of tissue that develops along the small intestine, about two feet from the colon. A Meckel’s diverticulum results from a persistent embryonic duct that does not regress during pregnancy. This persistent duct can present as painless rectal bleeding, torsion of the small bowel, abdominal pain, or a bowel obstruction. If this congenital anomaly is symptomatic and confirmed, it is typically treated with surgery.

Surgery consists of either stapling off the diverticular tissue or alternatively removing the entire segment of small bowel attached to the diverticulum. Typically, larger diverticula will require a small bowel resection. This can often be performed laparoscopically. Smaller diverticula are often able to be stapled off the side of the bowel and removed. Patients undergoing this procedure typically have a relatively short recovery and only stay a few days in the hospital. Most patients are able to return to normal activities within a week.
