Micro Phlebectomy
Varicose veins are not only unsightly, but can also be painful or cause bleeding. Varicose veins can develop due to genetics, lifestyle, or valve incompetence of the deep venous system. This causes a delay in blood return in the deep system and forces blood to be re-routed through superficial veins. These superficial veins have to swell to accommodate the increased blood flow and leads to the development of varicose veins. Although compression stockings can alleviate symptoms for some patients, for those patients with continued symptoms and larger superficial varicosities, removal with micro phlebectomy may prove beneficial.
A micro phlebectomy is often used after other venous procedures have failed to induce the desired results. In this procedure, the surgeon anesthetizes the area, makes a small incision over the vein, and then uses a small hook to remove the superficial vein. Sometimes sutures are placed, but most often the bleeding stops with direct pressure. The incision will then be closed and dressings are placed. This procedure can be repeated multiple times during the same treatment session. This procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. Potential complications include an allergy to local anesthesia, surgical site infection, post-operative recurrence, scarring, and pain.
When patients are looking for a vascular surgeon to perform a micro phlebectomy, it is important to find an exceptional vascular surgeon with whom you can develop a relationship with and trust.
