Embolization of tumors

Tumor embolization is an emerging modality for previously untreatable tumors.

Definition of Tumor Embolization

Treatment of cancer can include surgical removal, chemotherapy, or a procedure called embolization. Emboli are any debris, clot or other material that travels from one area to another within the bloodstream. While emboli often cause acute limb ischemia or strokes, tumor embolization uses man-made particles to block blood flow to the tumor. Tumors divide rapidly and require a significant amount of oxygen and nutrients. This means that a tumor is heavily dependent on its blood supply for survival. If the blood supply is removed from the tumor, the tumor will be starved for nutrients and die. Alternatively, chemotherapy particles can be used to deliver chemotherapy directly to the tumor as well as block blood supply to the tumor.

Anatomy

The area embolized will depend on the location of the tumor.

Causes of Cancer

Cancer is caused by a wide variety of mechanisms. Most cancers are initiated by a genetic mutation. The source of that mutation varies. Some patients are born with genetic mutations that allow tumors to proliferate. Other patients have previous exposures to toxic substances that in turn will affect genetic replication.

Symptoms of Cancer

Cancer symptoms can vary depending on the type and location of the tumor. Some tumors have no symptoms at all. Some common symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Rapidly growing mass
  • Jaundice
  • Anemia
  • Vague pain

Diagnosis of Cancer

While imaging can be suggestive of cancer or tumor, the ultimate diagnosis depends on the pathology of the biopsy or excision.

Prevention of Cancer

Some people have genetic conditions that might lead to weaker blood vessels or thinner blood that has trouble clotting. Ultimately, most of the risk comes from possible activities that could lead to traumatic damage.

Am I at Risk for Cancer or other Tumors?

Patients with a strong family history or known genetic abnormality are at an increased risk of cancer. Oncologists, genetic counselors, and surgeons can predict risk and help patients make informed decisions about treatment. All patients are encouraged to undergo routine screening for colon, breast, cervical, and prostate cancer.

Tumor Treatment Using Embolization

Tumor embolization is an endovascular process. Wires are manipulated to place small catheters within the vessel or vessels supplying the tumor. Once in position, a substance will be injected that will block blood supply. Alternatively, chemotherapy can be injected into the area. This procedure can be performed multiple times depending on the number of vessels supplying the tumor. Over time, the tumor will starve and shrink. The recovery time after this procedure is typically short because this is a minimally invasive procedure.
