Diverticulosis

There are some problems that are more common as people age such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. One of these conditions is called diverticulosis.

Definition of Diverticulosis

Diverticulosis is the name given to small outpouchings along the colon.

Anatomy of Diverticulosis

The colon contains a layer of muscle. Over time, this muscular wall may weaken allowing areas of protrusion. This is called diverticulosis.

Causes of Diverticulosis

The exact cause of diverticulosis is likely due to increased abdominal pressure, obesity, poor diet, and possibly abnormalities in the wall of the colon itself.

Symptoms of Diverticulosis

Most people do not have any symptoms of diverticulosis. Most of the problems start to arise when the diverticulosis becomes infected or inflamed causing diverticulitis. However, the most common symptom of diverticulosis is bleeding.

Diagnosis of Diverticulosis

For most patients, the diagnosis of diverticulosis is made by computed tomography for another reason. Many patients will be notified of the diagnosis after a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy will easily show the out pouched areas.

Prevention of Diverticulosis

Patients should eat a diet rich in fiber. Avoiding constipation, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding smoking are also likely useful.

Am I At Risk for Diverticulosis?

Some of the known risk factors for Diverticulosis include a diet that is low in fiber, heavy meat consumption, advanced age, a family history of diverticulosis, and connective tissue disorders.

Treatment of Diverticulosis

Most patients do not require any treatment for diverticulosis. For those with severe bleeding that does not resolve embolization or colonic resection may be necessary.
